Samsung has been slapped with a $340,000 fine for paying for negative online reviews of HTC products and positive reviews of its own products. Not cool, Samsung. Not cool.

[Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission ] says Samsung used a “large number of hired writers and designated employees” to post in Taiwanese forums. The commission does add that the company did this through a third-party marketing company, just as Samsung originally claimed. Two local marketing firms were fined a combined total of over $100,000 for their part in the marketing ploy.
According to the Inquirer, Samsung’s nefarious deeds were first recognized in April of this year, and the Fair Trade Commission has just now announced its decision. A Samsung spokesperson had this to say:
“We are disappointed that the Taiwan FTC has decided that we have violated the Fair Trade Act based on online marketing activities. However, we remain committed to engaging in transparent and honest communication with consumers.
“Samsung Electronics Taiwan is carefully reviewing the decision and will take all necessary steps to protect our reputation as a company which values its customers. Samsung Electronics Taiwan will continue to provide exceptional value for consumers in Taiwan through a wide variety of innovative products and services.”
This isn’t the first time Samsung has earned itself a fine from the Fair Trade Commission. Earlier this year, the company was forced to pay $10,000 for misrepresenting the capabilities of the Galaxy Y Duos GT-S6102 phone.
